php|architect: 5 meta-skills for the PHP developer
by Chris Cornutt February 23, 2010 @ 14:13:38
In a recent post to the php|architect site Marco Tabini has a suggestion of five meta-skills he thinks every PHP developer should learn.
But being a PHP developer is much more than writing PHP code. In fact, good PHP skills would be something that I would take for granted that every PHP developer should have'"and, if enough employers are as crazy as I am, there's a chance that I'm not the only one who wants to look beyond mere PHP to decide who is good and who is exceptional.
His list five of meta-skills for the PHP developer covers a wide range of things, not just involving the technology of web development:
- HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Understanding business
- Coming to grips with reality
- Using the phone
- Being humble

ThinkPHP Blog: Developing desktop applications by using web technologies
by Chris Cornutt December 02, 2009 @ 08:23:40
On the ThinkPHP blog today there's a new post looking at one of the better offerings for making desktop applications with the web-related skills you already know - CodeStrong (as a part of the Appcelerator/Titanium project).
Looking how to develop a desktop application in a short term, I came accross "Titanium Developer". This Open-Source tool helps you to create desktop apps. The special feature about it is the possibility to use well-known Web-Technologies such as HTML, JavaScript and PHP. Thus, learning a new programming language is no longer necessary. Another advantage is that you can directly create binaries for Mac, Linux and Windows using the same code.
They look at some example code to create a basic "Hello World" kind of tool and show how PHP can be embedded directly into the code, as made possible by the native PHP support introduced from contributions from people like Ben Ramsey.

Blue Parabola Blog: Writing Tech Books 101
by Chris Cornutt March 03, 2009 @ 11:11:28
For anyone out there looking to write a tech-related book, you will want to check out these tips from Matthew Turland over on the Blue Parabola blog. He gives eight (or so) tips to help out the budding authors in their pursuit for published stardom.
In lieu of a topic more focused on technical subject matter or practical application, I decided to take a post and detail some of my experiences in writing a book. [...] It's been quite the long haul, but I think being able to hold a copy of it in my hands will make it all worth it. So, here is the process as I've learned it from my own perspective.
Here's the overview of his list (there's lots more detail under each one):
- Be Serious
- Know Your Reasons
- Have a Concrete Idea
- Put Pen to Paper
- Do Your Homework
- Shop Around
- Find Editors
- Nose to the Grindstone
- Other miscellaneous items related to being an author
And, of course, the most important part - "Go Forth and Write".

PHPFreaks.com: The creation of the new site
by Chris Cornutt May 29, 2008 @ 09:31:01
With the successful relaunch of the PHPFreaks.com website recently, Daniel Egeberg wanted to share a little glimpse behind the work that it took to get to that place. In this new blog entry, he talks about the technology, code and design aspects they worked through.
I thought that, seeing as this is a programmer community, the people who have not had the privilege to have access to the forums where these things were discussed or access to the code itself might be interested in knowing a bit about the underlying technology and code that powers this website
Some of the technologies they use include the Zend Framework running on a CentOS with PHP5.2. Some of the highlights in the coding process included updates to Zend_Auth, using Zend_Acl for access management, content management and other various packages (like Zend_Feed, Zend_Form, Zend_Db, etc).
