SitePoint PHP Blog:
Interview Tom Oram and Rob Allen
April 18, 2014 @ 11:33:39

Continuing on in the "Can Great Apps Be Written in PHP?" series on the SitePoint PHP blog, Matthew Setter talks with Tom Oram and Rob Allen of Nineteen Feet about some of their experience with the language and some of the technology they've used (and recommend).

In our second interview, we talk to Tom Oram, who works for a small development firm in Wales and Rob Allen, from Nineteen Feet. These two developers have a solid wealth of PHP experience and knowledge and have helped me refine my ideas and approaches on many occasions.

The questions include:

  • What lead you to PHP?
  • What have been the highlights or redeeming features?
  • Do you see yourself moving to another language in the future?
  • How have you implemented deployment?
  • What testing tips can you share?

Check out the full post for Tom and Rob's answers.

Jacques Woodcock - The PHP Community Is Much More Than PHP Codes or Frameworks
April 18, 2014 @ 10:14:49

In the latest in their series of PHP community interviews, the 7PHP.com talks with Jacques Woodcock one of the leaders in the Nashville PHP community and of the Nashville PHP User Group (see his previous interview for more on that). In this interview they focus on some quotes from Jacques posted on the SouthernAlpha startup Twitter account about giving back to the community.

The 'level of wisdom' in them was too strong to be left there, I had to bring it out and I'm thankful to Jacques 'TheKit' Guy for sharing with me (and hence you) his precious experience he gained down the years and elaborating more on those quotes.

They go through each of the quotes and let Jacques expand on them a bit - why he got started with the community, some ways that people can get involved in their local group and remembering that a community is made up of more than just single actors.

SitePoint PHP Blog:
Can Great Apps Be Written in PHP - An Interview Series
April 15, 2014 @ 13:05:34

Matthew Setter has started off a series of posts on the SitePoint PHP blog with the first post interviewing community members to answer one main question, "can great apps be written in PHP?"

I read an old post, circa 2010, on the MailChimp blog a little while ago, about their experience using PHP. It struck a chord with me, because the sentiments they shared I've felt myself, and heard echoed many times over the years. [...] Despite its successes, or people's successes with it (a la Facebook, MailChimp, Hailo, Google, and others), it's inferred we should use languages which had their foundations as pure languages; not ones which came to be a language, as PHP evolved into over time.

He references some of the other comments in the Mailchimp article about their experience with the language along with mentions of a few others. He wonders if these negative comments are true and, to get some answers, searches out other developers and their opinions. In this first interview he talks with Bobby Deveaux about his background in the language, what he'd like to see added and more.

New Media Campaigns:
An Interview With the Founder of the Slim Framework for PHP
February 07, 2014 @ 11:55:29

On the New Media Campaigns site today they've posted an interview they did with Josh Lockhart, the lead developer behind the Slim PHP framework project. In it they talk some about his own experience and the framework, both past and future plans.

We have long been proponents of team members spending a portion of their time at NMC to work on side projects they're passionate about. The policy has been a great success, and we make many of the projects available to other developers, designers, and marketers. [...] One of the most successful projects is the Slim framework for PHP built by Josh. Josh noticed a void in PHP and decided to fill it by building his own framework. He collaborated not only with NMC'ers but also with programmers around the world to build Slim.

They start by getting to know Josh a bit, talking about his background in PHP and the origins of the Slim framework. They move on to talk specifically about the framework and what originally pushed him to create it. The interview also talks about how his work has affected both the community as a whole and his own current work.

He also offers two pieces of advice for beginning PHP developers:

For developers new to PHP, I encourage you to spend more time learning the HTTP protocol rather than focus too much on learning the PHP language. Obviously, you have to know PHP, but don't spend all your time doing so. [...] Also, join your local PHP User Group. Believe it or not, there are likely lots of fellow PHP developers nearby. If not, you can join the online Nomad PHP User Group.

SitePoint PHP Blog:
PHP The Right Way The Book
February 03, 2014 @ 12:05:57

On the SitePoint PHP blog today Bruno Skvorc talks about one of the best resources out there for people new to the PHP language (or even those wanting to hone their skills) - PHP: The Right Way. In his post he talks about the guide, it being published on LeanPub and where the proceeds from the book are going.

We can't keep the newbies away, and we can't educate the clients because most clients learn exclusively on mistakes. Shared host environments are also to blame, because their plans seldom include the most recent version of PHP, and are, due to price and ease of use, still the preferred hosting solution for legions of newcomers. So what can we do to spread best practices?

PTRW is a community effort, a website built entirely around spreading best up-to-date PHP practices. It's far from exhaustive - instead, it tries to bullet-list the things you should pay attention to, and links to quality resources where one can learn more about the various aspects it covers.

The book is an online resource, but it's been put on LeanPub to make it more portable and available offline. Since the book is a community resource and no one person should make the money from it, the choice was made to have all proceeds go to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. He finishes off the post with a brief interview with the book's maintainers Phil Sturgeon and Josh Lockhart.
